Writing from photos I have taken of butterflies from around the world, from the monarch in our garden to the tropical glasswing and owl butterfly, students explore the design and colors of the wings to create images. The ruffled edge of the monarch’s wing becomes the night sky sparkling with stars. The amber glow, a stained glass window.
To really see, to see with your heart, you need to take time, notice tiny details … rest on the tip of a leaf with the monarch,
take a little sip of nectar. As you begin to write, wait and listen to hear freshly. How does this poem want to sound?
